Walking in a Winter Waterland: What to Do When Water Damages Your Carpeting

Hint: Don’t Panic!

It’s every homeowner’s worst nightmare. You wake up and walk out of your bedroom to start your morning routine. That’s when you see it.

There’s water everywhere and it’s absolutely freezing. Your mind immediately begins to race and you panic, not knowing what to do or who to call.

Unfortunately, many homeowners and business owners face this type of situation each winter. Whether the water damage is due to burst pipes or a flooded basement, this problem immediately takes precedence over everything else. The question is: Who can fix it?

You might not expect a carpet cleaning company to be the answer. Well, good thing we’re a whole lot more than just carpet cleaners! We handle everything and anything pertaining to carpeting, including high-volume water extraction and complete water damage restoration. We’ll remove the water and moisture and make it as if the problem never happened!

Why Quick Response Is Key

The longer you let water linger, the more your home or business will be damaged. That’s why we offer same-day water extraction service and can respond within two hours or less in most cases. This is crucial for minimizing damage to your flooring/property and preventing mold and mildew growth that, when left unaddressed, will negatively impact your health.

Without question, water damage is an emergency that should never be taken lightly. Here at The Carpet Chemist, we know that it takes just a little bit of water to cause a great deal of stress. That’s why we always arrive promptly and fully prepared to tackle the job at hand. This includes stocking our vehicles with high-power vacuums that can remove hundreds of gallons of water per hour.

We’ve Got Drying Down to a Science

Reliably removing water and moisture is not a surface-level operation. In order to truly fix the problem, you need to delve deep and dry the entire floor, layer by layer. Here’s how we do it:

  1. Water extraction. This is when we’ll use our heavy-duty vacuums to remove all of the water, whether it’s a few or several gallons.
  2. Padding removal. Drying the carpet won’t do any good if the padding is also impacted. We’ll remove the damaged areas and replace them with new, dry padding to prevent mold and mildew from growing underneath the carpeting.
  3. Mold/mildew treatment. Once we remove the water and damaged padding, we’ll use a mold and mildew preventive/eradicator product to treat the sub-flooring and both sides of the carpet.
  4. Air movers. These machines blow air to the ground at high speeds, forcing the evaporation of any remaining water. Here at The Carpet Chemist, we use industrial air movers and will leave them running for a minimum of 72 hours.
  5. Dehumidifiers. Even when the water is gone, lingering moisture can cause problems down the road. For this reason, we leave at least one industrial humidifier in the area for a minimum of 72 hours.
  6. Reinstallation and cleaning. Finally, (phew!) we will reinstall the new padding, restretch the carpet and clean/sanitize the damaged area as long as moisture readings tell us that it’s safe to do so. We are never ones to back down from a challenge and will keep working until the water and moisture are both gone for good!
